Bulking: the beginner's guide

Updated: July 24, 2026

Want to build muscle but don't know where to start? Heard that you should just "eat everything, a lot, all the time" to bulk up? Bad news: that approach will mostly get you fat. Good news: a proper bulk, one that actually builds muscle without turning you into a fat ball, follows simple, measurable rules. Here's everything you need to know, no bullshit.

What bulking really means

Bulking means eating in a calorie surplus to give your body the energy it needs to build muscle, combined with resistance training that gives that muscle a reason to grow. Without a surplus, there's not enough energy to build anything. Without proper training, that surplus just turns into fat. The two go hand in hand — neither works on its own.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a +1000 to +1500 kcal surplus to make progress. Going too aggressive doesn't grow more muscle, it just stores more fat. Your body can only build muscle tissue at a limited rate, no matter how many extra calories you throw at it.

How to calculate your calorie surplus correctly

First things first: figure out your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), based on your basal metabolic rate (Mifflin-St Jeor formula) and your activity level. Once you have that number, add a moderate surplus on top:

In practice, if your TDEE is 2400 kcal, you're aiming for 2600 to 2750 kcal a day — not 3500. The goal: gain between 0.5 and 1 lb per week. Beyond that, you're mostly gaining fat. Below 0.2 lb per week, your surplus is probably too small to matter.

This is exactly the kind of calculation Kaizmax does automatically: based on your weight, height, age, and activity level, the app gives you a personalized calorie target, and adjusts it week by week based on what the scale actually shows.

Macros: what separates muscle from fat

Protein, non-negotiable

Aim for 1.6 to 2.2 g of protein per kg of body weight. For someone weighing 165 lbs (75 kg), that's 120 to 165 g a day, spread across 3 to 4 meals. Protein is your muscle-building material: without enough of it, your surplus just makes you bigger, not stronger.

Carbs, your training fuel

Carbs aren't the enemy — they're actually your number one ally when bulking. They fill up your glycogen stores and let you lift heavy. Aim for around 3 to 5 g per kg of body weight, depending on how active you are.

Fat, the adjustable variable

Once protein and carbs are set, fat fills in the rest of your calories, usually around 0.8 to 1 g per kg. Fat is essential for hormone production (testosterone included), so don't go cutting it drastically.

Training: the real trigger for growth

Eating in a surplus without training seriously just... makes you gain weight. For that surplus to actually build muscle, you need:

That's why a generic program isn't enough: your workouts need to match the equipment you have (full gym, home setup, resistance bands...) and your current level, otherwise you'll either stall or get hurt. Kaizmax generates workouts tailored to your equipment and recalculates your program as your performance evolves.

Clean bulk vs. "dirty" bulk

The "dirty bulk" (eating whatever, in huge amounts) had its moment on social media, but it mostly just piles on fat you'll painfully have to lose later. A clean bulk, on the other hand, relies on:

The goal isn't to be nutritionally perfect 24/7, but to have a clear structure you stick to 80% of the time.

Tracking progress and adjusting at the right time

A bulk that runs on autopilot without adjustments is the best way to end up with 18 lbs of fat for every 4 lbs of muscle. Here's what to watch every week:

This is where automatic recalibration really makes a difference: instead of sticking to a number calculated once and never revisited, your calorie target and your workouts need to evolve along with you. That's exactly how Kaizmax's engine works — it recalculates your program based on your actual progress.
